Alex Cardy is an award-winning Australian director of photography who works across feature films, short films, documentaries, visual installations and expanded online projects.
She has a passion for hybrid filmmaking and working between narrative and documentary projects and was recently awarded the gold cinematography award for documentary at the 2020 Australian Cinematography Society Awards for Victoria & Tasmania. She recently premiered ‘Living Room' and 'We’re Not Here' at Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) amongst other festivals. ‘Living Room’ was awarded ‘Best Cinematography’ at Vertigo Film Festival in 2020. Alex has moved to long form and recently completed filming feature-length documentary 'Nightshift' (2021). She is attached and in pre-production on multiple long form projects set to shoot in 2021 including award-winning filmmaker Rhys Graham’s (Galore, The Turning) new feature film 'Lover', Jonathan auf der Heide's (Van Diemen's Land) 'Devil Inside' and 'Pain and Prejudge' produced by Kate Laurie (Arena Media) and director by Bonnie Moir (Exit).
Alex has worked on branded content and commercials for brands such as Nike, Google, Champion, Bonds, Jeanswest, Lee & Land Rover.
Outside of narrative & commerical work, Alex has collaborated with iconic Australian contemporary artists on their moving-image installations including Patricia Piccinini's 'We Walk Together' and Eugenia Lim's 'On Demand' & 'Easy Riders'. She is also one of the founders at Sissy Screens, a digital magazine dedicated to queer screen culture supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria, City of Melbourne and City of Yarra.
